Discount Discovery: OPI Black Satin

While on a weekend getaway to Vermont with some friends I spotted a Big Lots near our hotel and I forced them to stop in so I could check out any nail polish that might be in stock because the two near me never get in any of the good ones I keep reading about other bloggers finding. While, unfortunately, they didn't have Essie's elusive Starry, Starry Night, (OK, that was a while ago, but hey! this was Vermont!) they did have a few bottles of OPI Black Satin. I pulled out my iPhone to do some research and saw that it was selling for $23 on Amazon!!! I should get them all!!! Oh, all right...  It's also selling for $5.50 on some other sites but I like to think I found a bargain and at $1.80 it is, isn't it?
OPI Black Satin, three coats plus top coat
Closeup to show the shimmers
The formula was thin so, although it covered fairly well with two coats, I felt it could use a third for close-up pictures and the photo shows that it's still pretty thin at the tips. The color is an interesting deep slate blue-gray with silver shimmers and over a ridge-filling base coat I had no problems with brush strokes. I'm not sure I would wear this one a lot but it does lend itself to some interesting possibilities for layering. Or maybe resale on Amazon...

KB Shimmer Summer 2013

Good morning! Today I have a few polishes from the new KB Shimmer summer collection to show you. When these polishes showed up to review I was pretty excited, they are so bright and fun!

First up is Totally Tubular. Here's KB Shimmer's description- "When I think of the 80′s and 90′s, I can not help but think of Valley Girls, Surfers, and the rad lingo that swept the nation.  Totally Tubular is our nod to that era, with is almost teal blue green color, the fuchsia circles in two sizes, aqua circles, and other hex glitters in different colors and sizes.  If you love Don’t Teal Anyone, this shade is similar, but not the same."

I used two coats for the swatches below. As you can see I had great glitter coverage but if you love those big circle glitters, there aren't as many in this polish as I only got 2 of them on my nails here. Two coats of Out the Door over top of it.

Here is What's Your Damage- "What’s Your Damage? is a white crelly polish with neon glitters in pink and green.  Black shreds and dots give this polish an edgy look that reminds me of the 80s and 90s.  Due to the size of the large glitters, this polish may look best layered over white."

I didn't need to layer this over white but I did use 3 coats for full coverage. I had to dab a little to get the glitter placement but the overall look is so fun and bright, I couldn't help but add some neon angular tips. I used China Glaze Escaping Reality and Ciate Mojito for the tips.

The last swatch I have is of 24 Carrot Bold- "24 Carrot Bold is a red-orange polish that is a stunning summer color.  This orange polish has a gold micro flake that shines in the light.  This polish is super pigmented for coverage in two coats.  Shake well before use."

Because of the neon pigment (and this polish is BRIGHT, my pictures do it no justice), 24 Carrot Bold dries to a satin matte finish. I like a matte finish ok, but I knew a shiny topcoat would make the gold micro flakies really pop. Oh I was right!

KB Shimmer can be purchased through their website or through their etsy shop. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with new collections!

Nicole by OPI: Selena Gomez Love Song

I've become friendly with the manager of the cosmetics counter at Walgreens and one day when I was checking out the new SinfulColors she mentioned that they had accidentally gotten in a few bottles of the Selena Gomez collection of Nicole by OPI, a line they don't normally carry. She said she would sell them to me at half price if I was interested, so I decided on this pretty violet shade, Love Song. I love it when I get a new purple that isn't a dupe for one I already have!
Love Song, two coats plus topcoat
I really like the color but I'm not overly fond of the bottle nor the brush on this line of polishes, which is why I tend to only get them when they show up for a couple of bucks at Job Lot or when I get a deal like this one. How about you? Are there polishes you won't get because of the bottles and/or brushes?

SinfulColors Sail La Vie / Ahoy There! Collection

Again, for some reason I don't understand, SinfulColors has released the same collection under two different names. Walgreens has Sail La Vie and Rite Aid has Ahoy There! but both have the same colors, so don't worry about missing out if you only have one store or the other. The collection has some repromotes — Cross My Heart (red), Snow Me White (white creme), and Out Of This World (white frost) — but a few new colors, too. I didn't get Sail La Vie because it's a dupe for Alfresco, but I did get the other three blues, New Wave, My Buoyfriend, and Into The Blue, as well as Anchors Away, a bright yellow-orange.

New Wave is a great dark denim blue creme that dries a touch darker than it appears in the bottle. The formula leveled beautifully and covered in one coat! I can see myself using this one a lot year-round.
New Wave, one coat plus topcoat
My Buoyfriend is a chameleon — you look at it and swear it's purple, then you shift your hand and it looks royal blue. I would guess that it takes on different hues depending upon what you are wearing, too. This one also leveled beautifully and covered in one coat.
My Buoyfriend, one coat plus topcoat
Into The Blue is a darker crelly version of My Buoyfriend that covered in one coat and dried so shiny it didn't need a topcoat. I think these new ones are very similar to the SinfulShine polishes!
Into The Blue, one coat, no topcoat
I already gave you a taste of Anchors Away in my yellow comparisons but here it is on its own. This yellow-orange is the color of the cheese powder in instant mac & cheese bowls. Unlike the blues, this one required two coats to cover but it leveled just as well. I can't see myself wearing it on its own but it would be a great accent color.

Discount Discovery: Sephora by OPI Frankly, I Don't Give A-dam

If you haven't heard by now, Sephora and OPI have decided to part ways and Sephora has marked down all of the Sephora by OPI polishes to $4.50! I've also been seeing a lot of them at Marshall's and TJ Maxx for $4, so be sure to check out those stores as well. The Sephora store is a pain for me to get to so I'm glad that their sale includes buying online, especially since I also got an ebate link for 8% cash back — how could I pass that up? I'll review all of them eventually, but today I'll start with my favorite (so far), Frankly, I Don't Give A-dam.
Frankly, I Don't Give A-dam, two coats plus top coat
The formula was great but I did notice that some of the bottles had the newer wide brush and some had long thin brushes. This one had the long thin one and I'm not terribly fond of those but this gorgeous gray is worth it!

Shimmer - Jovie

***Polish provided for review.  All opinions are my own.***

Earlier this week, I showed you Ninja Polish Ambrosia.  I've been staring at Shimmer Polish Jovie on my swatching table for a while.  It's so pretty and girlie.  I was thinking about putting it over baby pink but then I realized that it would be amazing over Ambrosia...and it is!

Jovie is described as:  pink opal holographic glitter polish.  Application was perfect.  One smooth, glitter packed coat over Ambrosia topped with Out the Door.  I loved it so much that for my next mani, I wore it as an accent nail over Essie Chinchilly.  I forgot to take a pic though! Sorry!

Keep up with the latest additions to the Shimmer collection by following their blog, liking them on Facebook. You can purchase the polishes directly from Shimmer through their Etsy shop.

Baby Shower Nails NOTD

Hey!  Last weekend I went to a baby shower for a good friend from high school and I wanted to do a blue theme since she's having a boy.  I suck at nail art and I'm constantly in a hurry since I have an almost two year old so I decided on a quick blue ombre.  I really love the way it turned out!

Pinkie:  Essie Midnight Cami
Ring:  China Glaze Man Hunt
Middle:  Cheap blue polish from a brand called Famous.  If you need to know the name, let me know in the comments and I will find it in my stash!
Pointer:  Color Club Hydrangea Kiss
Thumb (not pictured):  Sinful Cinderella

Ninja Polish - Ambrosia

Hi!  I have an amazing polish to show you today, Ninja Polish Ambrosia.  Anna got me Ambrosia and Pacific Coral for my birthday last month and I've been wearing them non-stop.  I really think I could wear Ambrosia for a month straight and never get sick of it.  This description from Ninja Polish is absolutely perfect:  am·bro·sia (amˈbrōZH(ē)ə) Noun - The nectar of the gods. Ninja Polish Ambrosia from the Enigma collection is a simply sweet taste for the eyes. It's hot pink jelly-ish base is the ideal consistency to not only cover in 2 coats but also to show off the gentle shimmer. Don't look away as you as you twiddle your fingers or you might miss the delicate color shifts in the shimmer! We hope you will find this polish as delectable as the nectar of the Gods....

I used Rejuvacote Base, 2 coats of Ambrosia and SV.  This polish wore like iron.  I wore it for 5 days straight without one chip or tip wear.

What do you think?  Do you own any of the polishes from the Enigma Collection?  They all so gorgeous!

Enchanted Polish - sPINKled

I'm going to start off by apologizing for showing you this amazing polish that is basically impossible to get.  Sorry.  But not sorry.  Because it's too beautiful to hide.  Many moons ago, I saw this post from Crystal's Crazy Combos and I knew I had to have sPINKled.  I'm really, really bad at keeping up with polish restocks (I just took a break from this post because that reminded me that I wanted Pretty Serious The Pink One and it was restocked yesterday. Got it! Score!) and I always forget.  sPINKled was a limited edition polish that randomly pops up in the Enchanted restocks Anyway, a sweet girl in my nail polish world let me know she saw it on a blog sale and I snapped it up!

I would described sPINKled as a hot pink jelly base with various sized black glitter and scattered holo glitter.  Basically, heaven in a bottle.  I used three coats for the swatches below and one thick coat of Seche Vite top coat.  I love everything about this polish!

What do you think?  Do you love it as much as I do?  Was it worth months of waiting and internet stalking?  I say yes.

NOTD: Revlon Entice

Here's another summery color for you, Revlon Brilliant Strength Entice. I'll have to do a comparison post soon, but it's a slightly darker, brighter version of OPI Mermaid's Tears. The brush and formula are great — barely any cleanup required — but as I mentioned in my review of Impress, the smell is enough to make your eyes water, so use it in a room with open windows! Must be something in it that gives it it's brilliant strength?

Mod Lacquer

Hello! Today I have an awesome new-to-me indie line to show you guys. When I got the opportunity to try this polish, I jumped on it! Mod Lacquer offers all kinds of polishes. From holos to glitter toppers to jelly based glitter, I'm kind of hooked. I also really dig the bottle shape.

Ok first up is 8-Bit Digits, a fine multi-color neon glitter polish in a clear base. Let me show you the undies I used on their own. Alfresco from the new Sinful Shine line of Sinful Colors polish. What a gorgeous bright cornflower blue!

I used two coats of 8-Bit Digits over Alfresco for the swatches below. I topped it with HK Girl topcoat to get it smooth and shiny.

Dreamland is a lavender creme that has tiny sparks of rainbow colors from the micro holographic glitter. I love this polish so much! It's such a Robin color. And as I'm writing this I remember I was supposed to send it to her but I completely forgot to give it to Erin to put in the next package of nail mail! Oh well. I guess I get to keep it! She's totally not gonna read this, right?

Nonpareils is a milky white jelly base with a variety of different sizes and colors of glitter. I love the mix of tiny glitter with the larger hexes and squares. The only problem I had was with the milky white jelly base. It was a bit milkier than I expected and I wasn't able to get full jelly coverage with the thin coats I was using. Two coats alone for the swatch below.

But I love the look of these glitters! Let's try it with a different base. Two coats of Essie Marshmallow make for good white jelly underwear.

Then I added two coats of Nonpareils over top. Perfect!

How fun are these polishes? I'm so impressed with Mod Lacquer and I can't wait to add more to my stash. Have you tried Mod Lacquer yet? You can purchase from their etsy shop and keep up with new collections on Facebook.

Revlon Impress

Do you have a CVS ExtraCare card? If you don't, you should get one! It gives you coupons and you can earn "ExtraCare Bucks" with your purchases, which is how I managed to get this bottle of Revlon Brilliant Strength for a whopping 42¢!
Revlon Impress
Impress is a kind of wet cement color, a beige-greeny-gray or maybe what the military would call an olive drab? In any case, it's different from my other grays and a welcome addition. I really like the brush and bottle shape but I have to warn you that the smell is awful! It's like when you squash a stinkbug, it's that bad. But the formula is fabulous and I got several days wear out of it. I haven't found the colors in this line to be terribly original but this particular one stood out and I'm glad I got it. One can never have enough neutrals, right? Just be sure to use it near an open window!

Discount Discovery: Revlon VIP

The Ocean State Job Lot near me has been getting a lot of Revlon polishes lately, sometime even current LE displays, so I've been checking them out regularly. Revlon had some awards themed collection last summer and Job Lot had the whole collection! I got a few of them but VIP was the big winner — when I wore it all my friends wanted it, too, so I went back and cleaned them out of that particular color. Revlon should give me a commission!
Revlon VIP
The formula was great and the color is different enough from the many mushroomy taupe colors that it stood out, which surprised me because I had definitely passed on it at full price when I saw the collection at CVS. Totally worth $2, though!

Discount Discovery: Sephora by OPI Let's Do Lunch

What a fun thing to do on a rainy Saturday, having lunch with friends, right? On a recent get-away weekend with some of my friends I visited the Marshall's in the mall next to our hotel and spotted some Sephora by OPI polishes marked down to $4 and was quite pleased to find Let's Do Lunch, a peachy shade with golden highlights.
Sephora by OPI Let's Do Lunch
This is a refreshingly juicy color and it's packed full of gold shimmer, which really sets the color off nicely on the nail, giving it that extra something.
Lots and lots of shimmer!
I now have a few colors of Sephora by OPI that I've found at either Marshall's or TJ Maxx — what's showing up at the ones near you?

NOTD — Essie Island Hopping

Tropical Storm Andrea is hitting the area right about now so I'm pretending I'm in the tropics (not very successfully, I might add, because it's also pretty chilly here.) I'm listening to vacation-y music to help set the mood and I painted my nails with Essie Island Hopping, a lovely delicate pinkish mauve.
Essie Island Hopping
This is one of the polishes I got when I couldn't find butter LONDON Toff because I was in the mood for a neutral with a little pop of color. It's part of their core line of colors so it should be easy to find.

Stay dry, all of you on the East Coast!

Aphrodite Lacquers - Flirty & Coy

***Polish provided for review.***

Hi!  Today I have a couple polishes from Aphrodite Lacquer's latest collection, Pink Is The New Black.  As always, Aphrodite knows how to do glitter.  And sometimes I think Rebecca gets in my brain and uses all my favorite colors to make her collections.  I'm serious.  Lavender glitter?  My dream.

Let's start off with Coymade up of many sized satin purple hexes and satin white hexes, with a purple and silver shimmer in a clear base.  I died when I saw this polish.  I could have lavender nails every day.  It's my neutral polish, my go to polish.  I love it.  I layered one and half coats of Coy over Essie She's Picture Perfect and this combo is f%^&ing perfect.  I've had it on for three days with not one chip or tip wear and I refuse to take it off.

Flirty is up next.  Pink, gahhhhhhhhhhhhh.  Flirty is described as:  neon pink sheerish base with blueish purple and pink shimmer packed full of different neon pinks, several different satin and matte pinks, satin and matte whites, blacks, a couple different color pink daisies, a few diff sizes of circle glitters, holos.  I layered two coats of Flirty over Pretty Serious The Pink One.  This combo is a pink explosion and I love it.  I should mention that I didn't get any pink daisies on my nails but that's fine because I don't like flower glitter!

What do you think of these polishes?  Coy is a must have for me!

Aphrodite Lacquer can be purchased on Etsy for $9 for a full size bottle.  Check their Facebook page for details and restocking updates.
