Discount Discovery: OPI Mermaid's Tears and a Comparison

I mentioned before that some polishes from OPI's Pirates of the Caribbean collection have been appearing at various TJ Maxx stores so I wasn't too surprised to see them at one in CT when I went while visiting with a friend. Normally they've been packaged as duos, but I guess these had been around for a while and there were several singles. I hadn't really planned to get Mermaid's Tears because I already had SinfulColors Open Seas, but it was the only bottle that had a price sticker on it and I wanted to get Planks A Lot, so I brought them both up to the counter to show them the price. The clerk didn't believe me and called the manager, who then decided that they would sell me both for $4 — an even better deal!
OPI Mermaid's Tears
I got two colors for the price of one!
In the end I'm really glad I did get Mermaid's Tears because the formula was perfection and I could finally do a real comparison post with Open Seas! (And I will do another comparison between Planks A Lot and SinfulColors Verbena later on, never fear!)
Mermaid's Tears on pointer and ring fingers, Open Seas on middle and pinkie.
While the two colors are indeed very close, Mermaid's Tears is just slightly darker and a touch grayer in tone. In shade it would be very difficult to tell them apart but it's more obvious in daylight. The formula and brush on Mermaid's Tears was better than Open Seas, but since they are both now retired colors I would say that if you want this color and don't yet have it, look around at Marshall's or TJ Maxx to see if they have Mermaid's Tears. You may still be able to find Open Seas at random Rite Aid or Walgreens stores but if you already have one, I don't really think you need the other (unless you get an incredible bargain, as I did!)

  1. Ahhh!! Mermaid's Tears and Planks A lot were the two I wanted from the OPI collection (if only I had been into nail polish then!). I will have to go check TJ Maxx soon and often :)

I have Open Seas, and it is pretty darn close looking at your comparison, so that helps!
I would love to find a random Sinful Colors Seaweed or Verbana, but I have scoured all of my semi-nearby Walgreens, and have not had luck!

    1. Yes, the two are close enough that if you can't find Mermaid's Tears I wouldn't be too disappointed, since you do have Open Seas. And Seaweed is also very close to Stranger Tides (I tried my cousin's, but don't have my own bottle of that one.) However, Verbena is not very close to Planks A Lot at all! Look for that comparison in the near future.

    1. So am I — it really is a great color and I can see why it's on everyone's "must have" list.

  4. Did you ever do your comparison of planks a lot? I couldn't find it.

    1. OOPS! I did and took the photos but forgot to post them! But that's good because I decided to ad a third polish to compare. Look for it soon!
