Zoya Arizona

I decided that I needed to break away from my comfort zone of blues and purples so I thought I'd leap over to the opposite side of the color wheel and try some oranges and corals. Anna and Erin love those colors and they had a lot of suggestions; I can't tell you how nerve-racking this has been for me. I was going to ease into it, maybe starting with a slightly brighter pink than I'd normally choose, but it's been so gray and rainy lately that I threw caution to the wind and went for the brightest orange I had. I am in still in shock...
Believe it or not, this orange is a lot brighter in person!
I have a very fair, blue-toned pale Scandinavian complexion so bright colors aren't really my best choice as they tend to make me look washed out. I could never in a million years get away with wearing an orange lipstick or eye shadow, but nail polish is a different matter. In the photos I'd seen online and on the Zoya site, Arizona looked to be a soft, sherbet-y Creamsicle kind of shade, so I thought it would be just the summery spice I needed. I suspect that in the same way that purples are difficult to capture accurately on camera, oranges are a challenge, too. This is actually closer to a Crossing Guard Safety Vest Orange kind of bright. I can tell you that if Arizona looked as good on my skin tone in person as it does in these photos, I'd be a happy camper. I love the way it looks here!
Three coats and still visible nail line. Damn!
Application-wise, it was a bit streaky and even with three coats there was a disappointing VNL and some balding. This is my first trial of the Zoyas I got and I hope they're not all like this. It had a very easy clean-up, though, and I love how glossy it is. As I wear it, the color is less of a shock and by tomorrow I may even like it. However, I can tell that it is extremely unlikely that I would ever wear this color again so Anna has already laid claim to it. (It is so much more her kind of color anyway, and I'm sure she's got a blue or purple that's got my name on it, too.) Now my goal is to find an orange that looks in real life the way Arizona looks in my photos!

  1. I wanted this to be soft like Chanel June! Still nice on you though, a bit bright for me though :)

    1. It is WAY brighter than Chanel June! I'd say a truer comparison would be to those circus peanut candies, but a touch darker.

  2. I love this color! This and Wednesday are the two I'm completely drawn to from this collection. (I think I remember seeing Wednesday in Anna's stash list so I'm going to need her to swatch that soon! haha) If you want a more muted orange, I have Gabrielle and I love it. It's not a creme though if that's what you're looking for. It's just a pretty shimmery sheer orange. After 3 coats, there's still VNL so it needs to be done over a nude.

On a side note - can I ask your clean up routine? It always looks so good!!

    1. I have Wednesday, too! In fact, it's what I had planned to do on, um... Wednesday. So look for that post, soon.

Gabrielle is a glitter, isn't it? I'm kind of taking a break from those for a while because the removal is so hard on my cuticles and they've been taking a beating lately.

Thanks for asking about my clean-up — I've been so proud of how my manis have been coming out ever since I learned the trick. I got a cheap small make-up brush at Ocean State Job Lot (I think it was a concealer brush and it only cost $2) and I dip it into straight acetone, then brush it along the edge of my cuticles and it clears up any mishaps. It has to be straight acetone because plain polish remover didn't work. It's very drying, so I paint on some cuticle oil after the Seche Vite has had a minute or so to dry.

I got a bottle of pure acetone at Sally Beauty Supply, along with one of those little glass jars barely bigger than a thimble and one of the squeeze bulb eye dropper things they have in the artificial nail area. The first time I tried to pour a small amount into the little jar it splashed all over, making a huge mess, so I now use the squeeze bulb thing to get the teaspoon or so that I need. You want to do that instead of leaving the bottle open because it evaporates so quickly, plus you don't want to contaminate your whole bottle each time you dip in your brush.

      Here's where I learned the trick: http://iliketotalkalot.wordpress.com/tag/how-to-clean-up-a-manicure/

    2. Please use Wednesday!! I can't wait to see your swatch!

I guess technically it would be, but it's small glass flecked glitter not full micro glitter. I had no issues whatsoever getting it off after I did my mani with it.

That's what I do, and it doesn't work at all. I always end up reverting back to my old way of wrapping an orange wood stick with a little piece of cotton ball.

    3. It might be the brush you're using. You need something firm enough to remove the polish, yet still flexible enough to gracefully follow the nail line. Mine is about 1/4" wide and just under 1/2" long, with a rounded tip. It was a cheap $2 concealer brush I got at Job Lot. I went back and got another one so I have one for dark polishes and another for light colors.

    1. Thanks! Orange is such a difficult color to try to show accurately.

    1. The sad thing is, if it looked the way it does in the photos I would love it! But it was really kind of "life vest orange" and it made my skin look pasty. It will look great on Anna, though!
