OPI Gouda Gouda Two Shoes

I have been on pins and needles waiting for the release of OPI's Holland collection ever since seeing it swatched on Fashion Polish. I especially wanted Gouda Gouda Two Shoes and Wooden Shoe Like to Know? because they looked like the perfect pink/rose and warm taupe colors that have been my unattainable quest for years. (That should have been a warning to me right there, aside from Sam being better at photographing her manicures than I am, not to mention better at doing her manis.) I ended up buying five of the Holland colors and an older Essie, which will get reviewed later. First up was Gouda Gouda Two Shoes, because I loved how it looked in her photos so much.

She did describe it as an "antique rosy brown" but I was expecting it to be a lot lighter and pinker than it was, with a lot more shimmer. There are visible shimmers in the bottle but unless you are in direct light they are nearly invisible on the nail, so much so that I would classify it as a creme+ — great if you're in a conservative environment and want to have a secret edgy feel, sort of like wearing a lacy thong under your basic banker's business suit. You know the shimmer's there but your boss isn't going to call you on it. As with all the OPI polishes I've tried, application is smooth and flows well. I did need three coats to cover tip show-through but could have done with two if I had been more careful in applying it. Appearance definitely improves with the application of a top coat (I used Seche Vite — thanks for the recommendation, Anna!)

I do like it and will definitely keep it in my favorites, but I was crushed (crushed!) that it didn't look like this. Live and learn...

UPDATE (2/17/12) I used Gouda Gouda Two Shoes again for my manicure this week and without the buildup of anticipation this time, I really like it! It will definitely go into my "favorites" section.
